We love diffusing essential oils in the salon. Most of the time, it's to make our space warm, welcoming and, of course, to smell good. We often get asked about the oils we use, so here’s a simple break down of essential oils, as well as a few of our favorite seasonal diffuser recipes.

How are essential oils used?

Essential oils can be used by topical application, inhalation or ingestion. How an essential oil should be used depends on your goal, the properties of the oil and safety concerns. Depending on the desired effect of the oil, people will often use a combination of delivery methods. It is important to research the proper use of each essential oil for safety issues.

Does quality matter?

The quality of the oils used will impact their function and potency. Quality is indicated by how pure the oils are (if they are adulterated), grade (usually determined by processing method) and integrity (natural and from a single plant species). None of these factors are defined or regulated by a governing institution. In other words, if you see a purity/quality claim by a company, they get to define what that actually means and are not held accountable to an external standard. However, quality will have a big impact on how much you pay and who you buy your oils from. We buy our oils from Young Living, a brand we trust completely. If you want to learn more about this brand visit our essential oil section.

How do essential oils work?
Essential oils share several properties with human blood. They fight infection, contain hormone-like compounds and initiate regeneration. They have a chemical structure similar to that of human cells and tissues, making them compatible with human protein and enabling them to be readily identified and accepted by the body.

What I love about oils is that they do not disturb the body’s natural homeostasis (in other words, the body's natural tendency to seek and maintain balance even when faced with external changes). If one constituent exerts too strong an effect, another constituent may counteract it. Synthetic chemicals usually have only one action and often disrupt homeostasis.

When you inhale oils, their molecules go directly to the limbic system of the brain, which is directly connected to areas of the brain that control hear rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels and hormone balance, enabling them to have profound physiological and psychological effects.

How quickly do oils work?

When inhaling essential oils, the molecules reach the brain within 22 seconds. When applying them topically, before the end of two minutes, it will be found in the blood stream. At the close of 20 minutes, every call in the entire body will have been affected.

How effective are oils?

Well, as with all holistic healing methods, there are believers and skeptics. We have seen a change in our own personal lives and so have many of our friends. Just like everything, there are studies that will support and dismiss someone's argument about oils' effectiveness. The best way to understand their effects is to get started using them in your own home. If you like the idea of using less chemicals and trying them out, hopefully this helps! We are here as a resource and happy to discuss how to get started any time, so please reach out with questions!
