We all know that using the proper products for your skin type is essential, but what's equally important (and can be just as confusing) is the correct order to apply each one. In fact, the order in which you apply your products could be even more important than the products themselves!

Once you've washed and toned your skin with a hydrating mist, reach for products with the most active ingredients and apply them right after cleansing. Since these are the most powerful, you want them to come into direct contact with your skin. If you're using more than one active product (like an antioxidant serum and Retin-A), start with the thinner one. Anything that's water soluble should be applied first, followed by the thicker and creamier product. If you do it in reverse, the heavier cream will block the ingredients of the lighter one from penetrating the skin, so they won't have any impact.

Moisturizer is next up, followed up by sunscreen each morning. Moisturizer will protect your skin from the environment, and help lock in all your preceding products.

To make things easy, we have a wonderful retail product line at Bow & Arrow, Jessa Organic, that labels each step to remind you the product order.

Step 1. Cleanse

Step 2. Tone

Step 3. Serum(s) - water-based first

Step 4. Moisturizer and/or sunblock

Remember that your routine might change seasonly or bi-annually. It is hard to make these decisions on your own, so stop in anytime to see me in the North End at Bow & Arrow. I can analyze your skin, pick out the appropriate products for you to use, and even suggest the correct spa treatments. It is always best to have a professional guide you, and I am happy to help!

Cheers to happy and healthy skin,

Jill
